barcelona

Over the long Easter weekend (Good Friday and Easter Monday are actual holidays in Europe), and to celebrate Ryan's birthday, we traveled to Barcelona with our friends Matt and Julie. For starters, I'd just like to say that our friends were real troopers that stayed on the smallest "sofa bed" in the history of mankind, so what else could we do for the whole weekend other than attempt to get really drunk every night so they didn't notice the discomfort. We did manage to fit in some touristy activities such as the free walking tour, cruising La Rambla, and La Sagrada Familia. I visited Barcelona eight years prior and La Sagrada Familia has changed remarkably in that time. The interior of the temple was largely under construction during my first visit, and now, with the light flooding through the numerous stained glass windows, it is simply breathtaking (pictures below).

We also ate lots of yummy tapas and paella, drank many bottles of delicious Spanish wine (and some less delicious Spanish beer), chilled on a rooftop bar, enjoyed a sunset from El Bunker, watched an FC Barcelona game at a small bar packed with locals, and belted out some karaoke into the early hours of the morning. Julie asked me to accompany her on some T. Swift which sounded like a great idea at the time. The music started and we couldn't quite hear the song and then couldn't find the beat to join in. I don't think we really sang a coherent word until the chorus started. It was one of the most shameful karaoke performances of my life. Here are some blurry cell phone pictures:
Matt got into the prop box to get into character.

Julie, we have to redeem ourselves.

Also, it's always a good time when you get lost in a foreign city on your way back to the AirBnB with two dead cell phones and only ten euro to your name. Julie and I had the cab stop at a hotel where I proceeded to navigate a conversation in rusty Spanish in order to determine where our apartment was located in relation to the hotel.

Oh yeah, and a bird pooped on my purse during this trip. Never a dull moment. Now, on to the photos.

La Rambla

A powerful drinking fountain caught me by surprise.

Nailed it.

Perusing the fruit market.

The eyebrows are on point.

A perfect likeness.

Apparently the artist thought Julie has a witch chin.

Matt: spot on. Julie: not so much. Adorable anyway.

Enjoying some Spanish wine!

Julie's quest for Micheladas was a success!

The only photo of the four of us. Photo cred: the waiter.

What's this beautiful building, you ask? El hospital, which I might add was the reason I was able to find our way home when we got lost.

La Sagrada Familia

None of these pictures will do it justice.

We love you, Barcelona.

Enjoying our last night in the city with some Spanish wine, good views, and great company.
We will miss you, travel partners! Good thing you'll move to Seattle, too, right? ;)

the mckereghans

By March, we had the pleasure of hosting both of our parents but had yet to host any friends. No offense, Jerri, Karen, and Dave, but sometimes partying with your parents just isn't the same as with your best friends. That all changed in mid-March when my best friend, Katie, her husband, Jerame, and their almost-two-year-old, Jack, came to visit for two weeks. They spent most of their trip in and around Munich due to challenges of traveling with a small child, but they definitely made the most of their time. They probably know Munich better than we do (at least from a monuments and tourist perspective) and also visited Salzburg, Neuschwanstein Castle, and Dachau. It was nice having them in town for the majority of their trip, because we were able to spend a lot of time just hanging out at the apartment drinking beers, taking them to various restaurants around the city, beer gardens when the weather allowed, etc. In fact, one of my favorite nights was just hanging out with Katie and Jerame (Ryan had gone to bed, lame) and drinking late into the night. We told stories, watched funny movies and clips, and it felt like I had never left Seattle. Oh, how I have missed our friends!

We did get them out of Bavaria for a long weekend to spend some time in Italy. Some of you may remember that Ryan and I have already been to South Tyrol, and we are generally not people to repeat trips. However, South Tyrol is just some special kind of wonderful. We were excited to show one of favorite places to some of our favorite people. Plus, we did a much different trip than last time... yes some of the activities were the same (wine tasting, hiking, and of course eating delicious foods), but at least all were at different locations.

Before I get into the South Tyrol photos and commentary (complements of Katie & Jerame's excellent photography skills), here are a few other favorite anecdotes from their visit, and yes they mostly revolve around Jack:
  • We successfully convinced Jack to call tractors (big deal in a little boy's world) "Lisha car." This is because, upon showing them my EU driver's license, we discovered that I am licensed to drive scooters, cars, and small tractors. He still calls a tractor "Lisha car" two months later, which I adore!
  • Every time Jack saw a motorcycle, he would yell/growl "motorkicle!" This kid is seriously into his motor vehicles.
  • During our hike in South Tyrol we saw a bunch of sheep. From this moment on, Jack and I spoke to each other in "Baaaa!" only.
  • I bet Jerame 20 euros that he couldn't fit an entire bread dumpling in his mouth and eat it without spitting any out. He successfully won this bet, and we have it all on video. If you ever want to see this hilarious footage, just ask.

The streets of Bozen / Bolzano.

Step 1: upon arrival into any city, seek out delicious food. The french fries are for Jack, and Ryan and I ate half of them.

Nothing like starting your Friday morning off with some wine tasting.
